Keep your feet healthy and strong by following these guidelines from the fitness experts at the American Podiatric Medical Association: * Kick athlete's foot by wearing synthetic fiber socks to help wick moisture away. Sprinkle foot powder into sneakers to help absorb excess moisture. Change socks and shoes regularly and never walk barefoot in public showers or locker rooms. A podiatrist can recommend the appropriate treatment and medication for fungal infections. * Block blisters by keeping feet dry and wearing well-cushioned socks and properly fitted shoes during a workout. * Knock out foot odor by rubbing cornstarch or spraying antiperspirant directly on the soles of the feet. Spray Lysol into shoes at the end of the day. * To avoid corns and calluses, use non-medicated footpads to cushion areas prone to corns. Apply moisturizer and use a pumice stone to help smooth calluses. Never trim calluses at home, except under a podiatrist's instructions. * Stomp out heel pain. A podiatrist can provide a shoe insert or a prescribed orthotic to alleviate the pressure on the heel. At the gym, be sure to stretch and properly warm up before getting started with a workout. In general, if you have heel pain, it's best to decrease athletic activity until the problem is resolved. * Prevent nail injuries by cutting toenails straight across, right above the top of each toe. Keeping the nails short will help prevent nail damage and ingrown toenails. Visit http://www.apma.org for all your foot care needs. Related Articles
