(NewsUSA) - If you are a woman who is gaining weight seemingly without cause and have been unable to lose that weight, the answer to your frustration may be something you've never considered. Your weight gain could be a symptom of a more serious medical condition known as PCOS.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS, is an imbalance in a woman's hormones. Women afflicted with PCOS often miss or have irregular periods caused by a lack of progesterone in their system and have a series of small cysts that grow on their ovaries. Symptoms can include increased acne, weight gain due to slow metabolism, irregular bleeding, infertility and depression -; and unless properly diagnosed by a doctor, the condition often goes undetected.

Despite first being recognized as a condition in 1845, the cause and cure of PCOS are still elusive. Following the Vitaline program -; a personally planned metabolic-rate diet plan that helps alleviate symptoms of PCOS -; has proven to be an effective way to safely and successfully manage PCOS symptoms. Since most women with PCOS can benefit from losing weight, the following tips can help PCOS sufferers find relief:

* Eat a small portion of protein before going to bed. Doing this will speed up your metabolism and help you lose weight faster.

* Gentle exercise on an empty stomach will burn off fat cells. Avoid lifting weights and muscle toning, and, instead, stick to fat-burning exercises. This is key to boosting your metabolic rate.

* Whenever possible, ingest hot food and drinks. These satisfy you for a longer period of time and aid in slimming. Even if eating a salad, try to have a hot soup or drink beforehand to prevent hunger pangs.

* Avoid "root" vegetables. Eating leafy, green vegetables is ideal for PCOS sufferers because these contain less sugar and are absorbed into the body of women with PCOS faster than root vegetables like potatoes and carrots.

* Avoid problem foods. PCOS sufferers are very sensitive to certain carbohydrates -; such as yeast, wheat, pasta and mashed potatoes. Look to healthy alternatives like rye bread, as well as fruits like pears and kiwi, due to their high fiber and vitamin content.
