Unless you’re one of the few people in the world with that perfect oval face, you know how difficult it can be to find the right make-up for your face. Fortunately, applying make-up is a cinch once you know what to do! However before you can even start to think about touching a brush, you have to take a long hard look in the mirror. By far, the most difficult thing to do when deciding how to do your make-up is discovering these things:

1. What is the shape of your face? Does your face look predominantly round when you look at it? An easy way to tell is if you have fuller cheeks and more sloped eyebrows. Or perhaps you have a square shaped face, with a squared off jaw line. You may also find that you have a heart shaped face- meaning your face comes to a delicate point at the chin. You may even have a widow’s peak that enhances the heart shape of your face. Or when you look in the mirror you might see a long face, with thinned cheeks and sloping eyebrows. However only a fair few of you will find that you have the long sought after, oval shaped face. This shape is the most complementary of all make-up styles and hair styles.

2. What is the Shape of Your Eyes? You may find that you have deep set eyes. Or maybe narrow set, wide set, protruding, small or large eyes. Each different shape means you need to shade your eye in a different place to emphasis the good, and camouflage the bad.

3. What is the Shape of Your Lips? Is your upper lip larger, or your lower? Or perhaps are they even? Are they small or large, thin or plump? The smaller your lips, the better they will look with glossy colors because it will make them look larger than they are. With larger lips, it is better to use neutral tones with a matte shine. A little gloss is great for night time, but try to keep it to a minimum during the day.

Once you have honestly and thoroughly examined your face, you can move on to the fun part- application! Having a routine will make it easy for you so try out these steps:

1. Begin any makeup application with moisturized skin and conditioned lips

2. Even out your skin with foundation all over and concealer in trouble areas, like under the eyes and around the nostrils.

3. Use a transparent powder to take away any shine -- just a bit on a large powder brush does the trick. Sweep the brush over your entire face and into the hairline.

4. For deep set eyes, dust entire eyelid with a light, pale, tone to bring the eyes forward. You can intensify color along the upper lash line with a medium tone, but its best not to darken the crease.

Or if you have narrow set eyes, keep the application on the outer edges of the eyes, extending slightly beyond the outer corners. For wide set eyes, Begin the application at the inner corners of the eyes. Try to avoid going past the outer corners.

If you have protruding eyes, Choose tones with warmth and depth to make the eyes recede. Dust a medium tone over the entire eyelid. You can also add a deeper tone in the crease or at the lash lines.

If your eyes are small, Use shimmery tones to bring light to the eyes. Avoid black at all costs -- it confines the eyes and looks too severe. Lastly, if you have large eyes, you can experiment with deep, warm tones. But keep your mascara soft.

5. Next, use a liner and/or mascara to define your eyes. When applying eye liner, you always want to choose a color that is opposite of your eye color. For instance, if you have green or blue eyes, use deep burgundy’s or browns. If you have brown eyes, you can use navy blue to make your eyes pop.

6. You could keep your face monochromatic and stop here -- then your look would be all about the eyes. But a bit of blush will give you a glowing complexion, with a hint more shape. Just apply a pink powder blush with a brush on the apples of your cheeks and up into the hair line. When applying blush always use a downward motion and never use too much. If you think you’ve put too much on, sweep some powder over your cheeks to mute the color- this will also help with blending.

7. Last is your lips, use some of the tips mentioned earlier to decide what to do with your mouth. But usually, the more colorful lips should only come out at night.

Although it is necessary to know the basics of make-up, you don’t have to follow everything to the point where there’s no fun in it! Try some different color combinations and play around with shapes and shadows. However, always remember to do everything in moderation and to blend your little heart out when applying color.
