Give the Gift of Sight

(NewsUSA) - Approximately 20 million Americans suffer from some level of vision impairment, which could be worrisome if not properly corrected, because vision damage can result in a loss of independence. Glasses, contacts and even LASIK surgery, however, have made it easier than ever to see clearly.

And while the technology is available, getting new glasses and contacts can be a financially taxing endeavor. In fact, Americans spend more than $500 million a year on glasses and contacts of which 73 percent of those costs are paid out of pocket. So, while glasses are essential, they aren't exactly affordable.

Lions Clubs International is stepping in to help. They have worked to aid the blind and visually impaired since 1917 and through their "Give the Gift of Sight" campaign sponsored by the Luxottica Group are collecting glasses nationwide for those in need, an annual tradition that, all told, has provided more than 1 million pair of glasses over the past nine years to men, women and children worldwide.

Once collected, the volunteers, who number in the thousands, clean, repair and sort the glasses. Finally, the recycled eyewear is hand-delivered to families through international missions.

Lions Clubs International is encouraging people throughout the nation to join in their mission by giving the gift of sight this year. Individuals can donate used prescription glasses and sunglasses or non-prescription sunglasses to their local schools, places of worship, businesses, recreation centers and senior centers. Collection kits can also be ordered online at http://www.givethegiftofsight.org.

Participation in the form of groups is also a welcome collaboration. Schools, scout troops and other community organizations are invited to join forces withLions Clubs International and spread the word. In fact, a university softball team in Pennsylvania did just that and collected more than 70 pair of glasses-glasses that could help prevent some of the 18 percent of hip fractures that occur because of low vision.
