- Vintage Inspired Sweet Tater Demonstrates Timeless Style With a Modern Edge - New York, NY (June 2007) – Inspired by the navy blue waters, volcanic cliffs, tiny houses whitewashed to fend off the heat and windy cobblestone streets of the Mediterranean, Sweet Tater (http://www.sweettater.net) unveils its Spring/Summer ’07 in-house collection as the company also presents its first exclusive line for famed boutique, Intermix, Sweet Tater for Intermix. Designed by Christina Kornilakis and Sarah Gregory, Sweet Tater is known for their tunics and shirtdresses in seasonally appropriate fabrics including crisp cottons, soft wools, luxurious silks and rich velvets. Each piece is adorned with special details including pleats, pintucks, bibs and bows. Spring/Summer ’07 continues with Sweet Tater’s traditionally classic, but edgy lines. “Sarah and I find inspiration not only in the pieces that our predecessors wore, but also the landscape and lifestyle of which we are so in awe,” Christina said referring to their Mediterranean backgrounds. “The beautiful vintage pieces we find in our everyday search to fill our boutique, Sweet Tater, have aided us in our approach to recreate the classic lines of those we’ve found in Greece and Italy. Due to their history and experience in discovering great vintage, their creations boast a mastered technique in applying unique treatments, craftsmanship and details that read authentic– not as vintage reproduction. Following a successful year of operating a vintage store of the same name in NoLita, Sweet Tater found an immediate following with the launch of their Fall 2005 collection of menswear inspired vests and high-waisted trousers. However, it was the Spring '06 collection, the season that brought “the magic dress” – a Grecian inspired cotton shirtdress that literally stopped girls in their frenetic New York pace and drew them into the store in droves. Operating under the motto “ena kai kalo,” in Greek meaning “one, but a good one,” Sweet Tater has since recreated “the magic dress” with variations in fabric, color or length while continuing to add new styles to their repertoire. It was the Greek Shirtdress that drew in Intermix buyer Alexis Geotes and lead her to commissioning an exclusive Sweet Tater line for the shop. “I was absolutely blown away by Sweet Tater when I first saw the line,” says Sari Sloane, VP of Fashion Merchandising for Intermix. “We knew that our customers would love this line, and the response has been amazing. Fashion-forward women look to Intermix for the newest, hottest designers to be mixed in with established designer names, and we are happy to launch this collection.” The Spring/Summer 07 Sweet Tater line consists of embroidered, gauzy and silk cottons featuring their signature Greek Shirtdress, guaranteed to be seen in variations throughout the life of the brand. A newly anticipated style is the cotton Greek Tunic, a quilted cap sleeve tunic with a plunging front framed with delicate pleats, but also the everpractical low, side pockets, “Our girls love pockets!” Sarah laughs. The Greek Shirtdress and Tunic will be available at both Sweet Tater and Intermix, however Intermix will have exclusive fabrics. The Angel Sleeve Tunic, created in ivory and light mauve is a silk/cotton blend exclusive to Intermix. The favorite piece this season is the Shepherd Blouse, say the girls. A feminine take on the ‘uniform’ of the shepherds who work seaside in the Mediterranean sun, this airy blouse features a voluminous sleeve, deep V-neckline with two self-buttons at the close and can be tied in the back at the empire or worn loosely. Exclusively for Sweet Tater, the Shepherd blouse will be made in solid cotton voile and a striped cotton gauze. Rounding out the collection is another style exclusive to Sweet Tater, a crisp cotton voile tunic with a three-quarter length safari sleeve and wooden buttons. Sweet Tater is located at 280 Mulberry Street, and houses both the Sweet Tater collection as well as the vintage collection Sarah and Christina are known for discovering. Related Articles
