Two-day event celebrates the arts, culture with unique multimedia exhibit, programs and parties DETROIT, March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. athletic shoe market is a more than $15 billion per-year industry that sells some 350 million pairs annually. What was once strictly a functional shoe has penetrated into all facets of mainstream America. More than a work shoe, athletic shoes are a fashion statement. YArts, the arts and humanities arm of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, celebrates the sneaker with "The Sneaker Project: Art from the Street Up," March 28-29 at the Boll Family YMCA, 1401 Broadway. The Center for Creative Studies, local sneaker boutiques and collectors are working with YArts to present the event. "The Sneaker Project celebrates a number of themes that reflect the evolution of sneakers from functional sportswear to cult art and fashion," said Gillian Eaton, vice president of YArts. "The involvement of artists and designers in customizing sneakers has extended the creative possibilities of the form." The exhibit--featuring local and national artists whose work has inspired shoe design--kicks off March 28 with a reception featuring athletes, street artists and sneaker designers. The event continues March 29 with artists customizing sneakers, a dunk exchange and celebration party. Public conversations with sneakophiles, artists and DJs are also planned. Visit thesneakerproject.org for tickets and more information. All proceeds benefit the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, providing scholarships to families and individuals. The event is designed for ages 14 and up.
