(NewsUSA) - During the holidays, families gather to celebrate traditions and create lasting memories. Many families bake dozens of cookies, write long gift lists or plan fancy parties. However, in America over 12 million kids and their families experience hunger. For them, the holidays prove one of the hardest times of the year.

But there are actions everyday Americans can take to make a hungry child's holiday shine just a little bit brighter. Share Our Strength, a not-for-profit organization that works to end childhood hunger in America through innovative fundraising programs, offers the following tips for families looking to give back:

- Adopt a family for the holidays. Many organizations allow individuals or groups to "adopt" a struggling family by anonymously providing food for a holiday feast, as well as small presents for the children. The children in these families may not get enough food on a regular basis, let alone new toys, so receiving such bounty makes their holiday feel magical.

- When entertaining, make purchases that help support the fight against child hunger. When entertaining or looking for a hostess gift, try Tastefully Simple's For the Love of Cookies Chocolate Chip Toffee Almond Cookie Mix (available at http://www.Tastefullysimple.com). For each box sold, Tastefully Simple will donate $1 to Share Our Strength.

If you are planning on buying a Hickory Farms gift package, consider purchasing the Party Planner Gift Box between November 27th and December 10th, when Hickory Farms will give $5 to Share Our Strength for every box sold. You can also add $1 for Share Our Strength to any online, in-store or catalog Hickory Farms purchase.

- Make your gifts give twice. Go to http://www.strength.org to purchase "Share Your Season" holiday cards that double as gift tags, which are a great way to remember family and friends, but also to help feed a hungry child.

- Volunteer at a food bank or food pantry. Soup kitchens usually see more visitors on holidays, so they need extra hands to set up tables and serve food. You can also help organize or donate to a food drive. Food banks always need canned and non-perishable goods.
