(NewsUSA) - Sometimes, it seems like everyone you know is expecting a child. Among co-workers, relatives and friends, knowing how to plan a pleasing baby shower proves an important skill. Here are some tips for friends and relatives looking to celebrate moms-to-be:

- Forget yelling, "Surprise!" Some women love surprise parties, others don't. If you know the mom-to-be well, plan based on her personality and wishes. If you are organizing a bridal shower for a co-worker, you might want to make shower plans known.

Announcing the baby shower makes planning easier. The mom-to-be can register for gifts and approve the guest list, while the host benefits from being able to communicate directly with her.

- Decide what kind of party you will hold. Brunch showers are one popular option, while other hosts opt to serve tea, lunch or dinner. Potlock baby showers, in which each guest brings food along with a gift, can be fun and less expensive than a catered luncheon. Decorate baby-themed cupcakes and cookies for sweet treats that everyone will love.

Modern dads-to-be might want to be involved. If planning a unisex baby shower, make sure that both sexes can enjoy the food and games.

- Plan the gifts. Make sure that new parents receive the practical items that they will need, along with those whimsical silver-plated rattles. Products that do more than one job can be especially helpful.

For example, there is a thermometer on the market, a perfect gift for the approaching cold and flu season, called the Thermofocus 5-in-1 (http://www.kidzmed.com), which takes a clinically accurate temperature without even touching the baby. Parents simply take the temperature from the middle of their child's forehead -; they don't even need to wake their baby to check his or her temperature. Unlike other thermometers, the Thermofocus 5-in-1 can tell Mom when her baby's bottle is too hot, and Dad when the bath water is too cold, making it a useful safety tool for new parents.

- Pick the right games. If you choose to play games, make sure that everyone present can enjoy them. Fun ideas include baby-themed charades or Pictionary.
