Who Will be America’s Next Great Shoe Designer?

Footwear News and Nine West have joined forces with the Fashion Institute of Technology to launch the first ever “Shoe Star” contest whereby students will compete in a series of challenges that will culminate in the naming of the next rising star in shoe design. The winner will receive a coveted spot on the Nine West Design Team, which includes a one year full-time job at the company as an assistant designer, as well as a feature story in the footwear industry’s leading publication, FN.

This week, the seven shoe star contestants were announced and the first challenge revealed! Over the next six months, the seven finalists will compete against each other in a series of six challenges testing their ability to create innovative designs that will keep them in the running to win the 2008 Shoe Star title.

The first of six challenges will be the Sketch Challenge on February 6th. Each contestant will submit sketches of one evening shoe, one sandal OR flat, one fantasy/wild card shoe, one sneaker, one boot and an essay describing the inspiration for the design. The Guest Celebrity Judge for this challenge will be famed footwear designer Giuseppe Zanotti!

A panel of industry professionals, including FN’s editorial director Michael Atmore, Nine West’s creative director Fred Allard, FIT’s professor and chairperson of the accessories design program Ellen Goldstein and a rotating list of celebrity judges, will critique each challenge, eliminating one contestant each round until the winner is announced at the Fashion Footwear Association of New York’s tradeshow in June.
