Dara Zaidman-Steiger MS, RD, LDN, Director of Behavior Education and Nutrition for L A Weight Loss Centers, Suggests Small Changes That Make a Big Difference HORSHAM, Pa., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- It's time for spring cleaning once again, and this year, Dara Zaidman-Steiger, Director of Behavior Education and Nutrition for L A Weight Loss Centers, Inc., offers tips for spring cleaning one of the most often overlooked items in the household, the refrigerator. Eating healthy is just part of the challenge when trying to lose or maintain your weight. The other part of the challenge is to shop healthy, too. "Unfortunately, even the most health-conscious eater can make mistakes at home," said Zaidman-Steiger. "That's why we have put together some great spring tips for fresh thinking about the way we eat." This spring, start fresh ... -- Think Lean: Instead of purchasing full-fat ricotta cheese and milk, try skim varieties for a simple way to decrease fat intake. -- Fresh is Best: Always chose fresh products over frozen when possible. Instead of frozen creamed spinach or chicken tenders, stick with fresh spinach and grilled chicken breast, to reduce fat and sodium intake. -- Don't be fooled: Just because it looks healthy doesn't mean it is. Apples are always a better choice over sweetened applesauce to add fiber to your diet. An orange with a glass of water instead of orange juice will help avoid unnecessary sugars. Look for low-sugar, all- natural fruit jam instead of regular jelly to decrease simple sugar consumption. -- The other meat: Skipping the BBQ pork ribs and heading straight for the sizzling sirloin steak will keep you fully satisfied but with less fat. -- Think Alternatives: Resist the urge of those frozen french fries, instead bake a sweet potato to get added fiber in your diet without sacrificing taste. Spring cleaning your fridge to keep foods that will make you look your best will help kick off the spring season in a healthy way. L A Weight Loss teaches a well-balanced diet consisting of lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, starches, dairy and healthy fats and encourages clients to shop at regular grocery stores.
