(NewsUSA) - Americans often choose contact lenses over glasses. Some people prefer the natural appearance that is projected when they wear contact lenses, while others might enjoy the improved convenience afforded by contacts. But contact lenses do carry certain risks.

When worn in the prescribed manner, contact lenses are a safe and easy answer to correct certain vision problems. However, care issues such as improperly cleaned lenses can lead to serious eye infections and potentially lead to permanent visual impairment. To enjoy the benefits of contact lenses while keeping your eyes safe, consider these tips:

- Always wash your hands before inserting or removing your contacts. Bacteria grow on every surface you come in contact with, and you don't want to transfer germs from your hands onto your eyes, where they can cause real harm to your vision.

- Clean your lenses properly. Your eyes produce proteins and oils (lipids) everyday, which build-up on contact lenses. Skipping necessary steps in the care process, like rubbing both sides of your lenses with preserved cleaning solution, can lead to infections and damaged ocular tissue.

- Use a lens-cleaning storage device. Best Health, Inc. has developed the LensComfort Ultrasonic Cleaning, Disinfecting and Storage Unit, which uses ultrasonic waves to boost the disinfecting and cleaning power of their LensComfort Ultrasonic Solution, uniformly and thoroughly cleaning both sides of the contact lens. In 15 minutes, the unit completely removes proteins, oils and debris, such a make-up, from gas-permeable, soft, disposable and specialty contact lenses.

- Wear sunglasses. Some contacts come with built-in UV protection, but that doesn't mean that you can skip the shades -; contact lenses only impart minimal UV protection.

- Watch how you apply your cosmetics. Getting make-up in your eye always stings. Contact lenses can trap make-up under them and cause painful irritation.

- Always apply your contacts before putting make-up on. If you use powder, keep you eye completely closed while you brush powder over your lids. Make sure there's no loose powder before opening your eye. If you prefer cream shadow, use water-based, not oil-based, creams. Never apply eyeliner between your eye and your lashes. Remove your contacts before using eye make-up remover.
