Halloween is by far the most sugar-laden holiday in the United States, and candy sales surpass even Easter. Every time you enter the grocery store you are bombarded by chocolate and huge bags of Skittles and Starburst. Just thinking about diving into a bag of Reeses and swimming in the candy is a thought I know many of you entertain more than once a day. But Halloween can be a healthier holiday then we give it credit for.

This year, instead of gorging on Gobstoppers try some nutritious alternatives to sate your sweet tooth. For instance, instead of Snickers try Jelly Beans, Gum, Teddy Grahams, Gummy Bears, or some mini rice cakes. All of these choices, when eaten in moderation can keep your cravings under control without ruining your diet.

However, if you do succumb to the candy don’t beat yourself up about it. I promise you won’t be the only one! Just remember to stick to the rest of your diet and don’t give up even though you’ve had a set back. One of the biggest problems people have when they mess up their diet is that they think the day is ruined and they keep eating poorly, thinking they will start over again tomorrow. No, no no! Start over now. If you give in and have a snack, that’s OK! Just don’t let it affect how you eat for the rest of the day.

One sure fire way to keep that candy weight off is to make sure and do plenty of exercise. If you eat 250 calories worth of candy, make sure you burn at least that much in your next exercise session. In truth, it doesn’t matter what kind of work out you do, just as long as you’re burning more calories than you are taking in. This is the key to losing weight.

So this Halloween don’t be afraid to snack on a few candies, just make sure it is all in moderation. And if you can withstand the allure of a Milky Way, try some of the healthier alternatives I mentioned. Have a healthy Halloween!
