(NewsUSA) - Does the squeal of a dentist's drill mixed with the sounds of smooth jazz strike fear into your heart? If so, you're certainly not alone.

According to Columbia University's College of Dental Medicine, dental anxiety is extremely common. Between 9 percent and 15 percent of all Americans avoid visiting the dentist due to fear. This translates to more than 30 million people afflicted with dental anxiety.

But with technological advancements in many areas of dentistry, some procedures that once made patients' blood run cold are no longer as painful as they used to be. For example, in the field of cosmetic dentistry, painful veneer procedures are no longer the only option. There is now a newer, painless veneer option called Lumineers.

Traditional veneers typically require significant drilling or grinding down of sensitive tooth structure, a procedure that's both painful and time-consuming. Lumineers, made from strong yet ultra-thin Cerinate porcelain, are so minimally invasive that anesthesia is unnecessary, one reason why many dentists are adopting Lumineers and moving away from more dated procedures.

"I want to offer my patients the most painless and convenient choice for veneers," said David Nusblatt, a Manhattan dentist. "Lumineers are exceptionally unique because they are so minimally invasive. If there isn't a need to remove tooth structure, then why do it?"

Lumineers can be applied in just two visits and are clinically proven to last up to 20 years. Because the procedure allows tooth structure to remain intact, Lumineers are reversible if the patient so desires.

More than 11,000 dentists now use Lumineers, which were named one of Dental Products Report's list of "Top 10 Products." Lumineers provide instant teeth straightening and whitening, offering a convenient alternative to braces and other orthodontics that once gave many dental patients the jitters.
