ALBANY, N.Y., March 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Seeking comfort at bedtime, most women prefer snuggling up with blankets or pillows, while men want a body next to them, finds a survey among American adults aged 18 and older. Among those who were asked about comfort while sleeping, only 29 percent of women rated human companionship most comfortable.

The responses are contained in PrimaLoft's annual "Comfort Zone" survey that asked Americans which things or situations most symbolize comfort in their minds. (http://www.primaloft.com).

Men and women have different ideas on what gives them comfort while sleeping. While men are most likely to say that sleeping next to another person is most comfortable (47 percent), women are most likely to prefer to reach for the pillows or blankets (53 percent, compared to 32 percent of men).

Sleeping with the window open? Cold weather or concerns about safety might be reasons why only 15 percent of Americans feel comfortable with that idea.

"The bedroom is a logical place to retreat from stress," said Tom Mendl, marketing director at PrimaLoft, a producer of insulation for luxury bedding and apparel. "And our bed is the focal point of that sanctuary."

Although traditionally linked with comfort, living things such as your mother's voice and your dog finished well behind a quiet room, when Americans were asked what was most comforting to them.

When presented with a list of words or phrases generally believed to put people at ease, respondents said that "meat loaf," a widely acknowledged comfort food, was at the bottom of the list. Both men and women found a warm hug, and a quiet room most comforting. About one in four (26 percent) women said the thought of "a quiet room" is most comforting, while 25 percent of women also found "a warm hug" soothing. Men preferred the comfort of a hug (27 percent), followed by a quiet room (22 percent).

Far down in the responses from men and women were those who picked "your dog" or "your mother's voice" at about 15 percent each.

The telephone survey was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media among 1,005 adults aged 18+ from January 11-13, 2008. The survey participants were selected through random-digit dialing across the continental United States. The poll's margin of error at a 95% confidence level is +/- 3% for the full sample.
