(NewsUSA) - Finding that one piece of clothing that's a perfect addition to your wardrobe is like finding a diamond in the rough.

However, keeping it looking as new as the day you bought it presents a challenge.

Here are a few tips on caring for the clothes you care so much about:

* To get the best wash out of each cycle, wash similar sizes together so the detergent distributes evenly, and use a laundry booster such as 20 Mule Team Borax. Borax acts as a water conditioner to soften the water, which enhances your regular detergent's cleaning power. Washing your clothes properly can lengthen the lifespan of your garments by as much as 40 percent.

* Using a clothesline or drying rack is better for your garments; in addition to saving money, you are also going green. To avoid ironing, remove your clothes from the dryer slightly damp and hang them up.

* To keep buttons attached to your clothes, dab clear nail polish on the center of each button to seal the threads. Carry baby wipes with you to help with removing stains, lint and dirt from clothing or shoes.
